Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:117

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abu Usama narrated to us, from Mujalid, from Ziyad ibn 'Alaqah, from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) arrived in Medina, Juhaynah came and said: "You have settled among us, so make a pact with us so that we may be safe from you and you may be safe from us." So he made a pact with them, and they had not yet embraced Islam. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent us in Rajab, and we were not a hundred. He ordered us to raid a tribe of Kinana adjacent to Juhaynah. He said: So we raided them, and they were numerous, so we sought refuge with Juhaynah, and they protected us and said: "Do you fight in the Sacred Month?" We said: "We only fight those who drove us out of the Sacred Land in the Sacred Month." Some of us said to others: "What do you think?" Some said: "Let us go to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and inform him." A group said: "No, rather we shall stay here." And I said, along with some people with me: "No, rather we shall go to this caravan of Quraysh and seize it." So we went to the caravan—and the spoils at that time were for whoever took something, it was his—so we went to the caravan, and our companions went to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and informed him of the news. He stood up, angry, his color and his face reddened, and he said: "You left from me together and you have come back divided. Those who were before you were only destroyed by division. I will surely send against you a man who is not the best of you, but the most patient of you against hunger and thirst." So he sent Abdullah ibn Jahsh al-Asadi over us, and he was the first commander in Islam.
