Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:156

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu 'Ubaydah, from 'Abdullah, who said: When the day of Badr arrived, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "What do you say regarding these captives?" Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, they are your people and your kin. Spare them and accept their repentance, perhaps Allah will turn to them in repentance." 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, they called you a liar and expelled you. Bring them forward so we may strike their necks." 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: "O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley with much firewood, so set the valley on fire upon them and throw them into it." Al-'Abbas said: "May Allah sever your kinship." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained silent and did not reply to them. Then he stood up and entered [his tent]. Some people said: "He will take the opinion of Abu Bakr." Others said: "He will take the opinion of 'Umar." And others said: "He will take the opinion of 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah." Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and said: "Verily, Allah softens the hearts of some men therein until they are softer than milk, and verily, Allah hardens the hearts of some men therein until they are harder than stone. And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like Ibrahim, who said: 'Then whoever follows me, he is of me; and whoever disobeys me—indeed, You are Forgiving, Merciful.' And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like 'Isa, who said: 'If You should punish them—indeed they are Your servants; and if You forgive them—indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Musa, who said: 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.' And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Nuh, who said: 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers any inhabitant.' You are needy, so let not one of them escape except by ransom or a strike of the neck." Ibn Mas'ud said: "O Messenger of Allah, except Suhayl ibn Bayda', for I have heard him mention Islam." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained silent. I have never seen myself on a day more fearful that stones might fall upon me from the sky than I was on that day, until the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Except Suhayl ibn Bayda'." Then Allah revealed: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he inflicts slaughter in the land," to the end of the verse.
