Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:174

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) consulted [the people] when news reached him of the approach of Abu Sufyan. He said: So Abu Bakr spoke, and he turned away from him. Then 'Umar spoke, and he turned away from him. Then Sa'd bin 'Ubadah said: "Is it us you want, O Messenger of Allah? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if you were to order us to drive them [the horses/camels] into the sea, we would drive them into it, and if you were to order us to strike their flanks to Bark al-Ghimad, we would do it." He said: So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called upon the people. He said: So they set out until they descended at Badr. The water-carriers of Quraysh came to them, and among them was a black boy belonging to the sons of al-Hajjaj, so they captured him. The companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to ask him about Abu Sufyan and his companions, and he would say: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Abu Jahl, 'Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf." So when he said that, they would beat him. He said: "Yes, I will inform you, this is Abu Sufyan." So when they left him, they would ask him, and he would say: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Abu Jahl, 'Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf among the people." So when he said this as well, they would beat him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was standing praying, and when he saw that, he finished [his prayer]. He said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you beat him when he tells you the truth, and you leave him when he lies to you." He said: And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This is the place of death of so-and-so," placing his hand on the ground here and here. And none of them deviated from the place of the hand of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
