Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:175

Shababa ibn Sawwar narrated to us, he said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughira narrated to us, from Thabit, who said: Anas narrated to us, he said: We were with Umar between Makkah and Madinah, looking for the crescent moon. I saw it, and I was sharp-sighted, so I began saying to Umar, "Do you not see it?" Umar began looking but did not see it, while I was lying on my bedding. Then he began to speak to us about the people of Badr. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was pointing out the places where the people of Badr would fall the day before, saying, "This is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, if Allah wills, and this is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, if Allah wills." He said: By the One who sent him with the truth, they did not miss those boundaries where they fell. Then they were placed in a well, one upon another. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went until he reached them and said, "O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?" Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, how do you speak to bodies that have no souls in them?" He said, "You are not more hearing to what I say than they are, except that they are unable to reply to me with anything."
