Hadith 36:249

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, he said: 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib informed us, from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn Mas'ud, that the women were behind the Muslims on the day of Uhud, finishing off the wounded of the polytheists. If I were to swear on that day, I would hope to be truthful that there was not one among us who wanted the world, until Allah revealed: "Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [to test you]." When the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, disobeyed and went against what they were commanded, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was left alone with nine [men]: seven from the Ansar and two men from Quraysh, and he was the tenth of them. When they [the polytheists] drew near to him, he said: "May Allah have mercy on a man who repels them from us." A man from the Ansar stood up and fought for a while until he was killed. When they drew near to him again, he said: "May Allah have mercy on a man who repels them from us." He kept saying that until the seven were killed. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to his two companions: "Our companions have not treated us fairly." Abu Sufyan came and said: "Exalted be Hubal." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Say: Allah is Most High and Most Majestic." Abu Sufyan said: "We have al-'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Say: Allah is our Protector, and the disbelievers have no protector." Abu Sufyan said: "A day for a day, like Badr; a day for us and a day against us. And a day of women and a day of victory. Hanzalah for Hanzalah, and so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "It is not the same. As for our dead, they are alive, provided for; and as for your dead, they are in the Fire, being punished." Then Abu Sufyan said: "There has been mutilation among the people, and although it was not by my command, I did not order it, nor did I forbid it, nor did I like it, nor did I dislike it, nor did it grieve me, nor did it please me." They looked, and behold, Hamzah’s stomach had been slit open, and Hind had taken his liver and chewed it, but she was not able to eat it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Did she eat anything of it?" They said: "No." He said: "Allah would not let anything of Hamzah enter the Fire." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, placed Hamzah and prayed over him. Then a man from the Ansar was brought and placed beside him, and he prayed over him. Then the Ansari was lifted, and Hamzah was left. Then another was brought and placed beside Hamzah, and he prayed over him, then he was lifted, and Hamzah was left, until he had prayed over him seventy prayers that day.
