Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad bin ‘Amr informed us, from his father, from his grandfather, from ‘Aisha, who said: I went out on the day of the Trench, following the tracks of the people. I heard the thud of the earth behind me, so I turned around, and there I was with Sa’d bin Mu’adh, and with him was his nephew, Al-Harith bin Aws, carrying his shield. So I sat down on the ground. She said: Sa’d passed by, and he was wearing a coat of mail from which his limbs were protruding, and I was fearful for the limbs of Sa’d. She said: He was among the greatest and tallest of people. She said: He passed by reciting rajaz poetry, saying: "Wait a little, the battle will reach the carrier. How excellent is death when the appointed time arrives." She said: So I stood up and rushed into a garden, and there were a group of Muslims in it, among them ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab, and among them was a man wearing his *tasbigha*—meaning the helmet. She said: ‘Umar said, "Woe to you, what brought you here? Woe to you, what brought you here? By Allah, you are indeed bold! What makes you feel secure that there might not be a retreat or a calamity?" She said: He did not cease blaming me until I wished that the earth would split open and I would enter into it. She said: Then the man raised the *tasbigha* from his face, and it was Talha bin ‘Ubayd Allah. He said, "O ‘Umar, woe to you, you have said too much since today. And where is there any retreat or flight except to Allah?" She said: A man from the polytheists of Quraysh, called Hibban bin Al-‘Ariqa, shot Sa’d with an arrow and said, "Take it, and I am the son of Al-‘Ariqa." It struck his median vein and severed it. So he supplicated to Allah and said, "O Allah, do not let me die until You cool my eyes regarding Qurayza," for they were his allies and clients during the Jahiliyyah. So his wound healed, and Allah sent the wind against the polytheists, and Allah spared the believers from fighting, and Allah is Powerful, Exalted in Might. Abu Sufyan retreated to Tihama, and ‘Uyayna bin Badr bin Hisn and those with him retreated to Najd, and Banu Qurayza returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to Medina and ordered a tent to be pitched for Sa’d in the mosque, and he laid down his weapons. She said: Gabriel came to him and said, "Have you laid down your weapons? By Allah, the angels have not laid down their weapons. So go out to Banu Qurayza and fight them." So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered the departure and put on his armor. He went out and passed by Banu Ghanm, and they were neighbors of the mosque. He said, "Who passed by you?" They said, "Dihya al-Kalbi passed by us." And Dihya’s beard, appearance, and face resembled Gabriel. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to them and besieged them for twenty-five days. When their siege became severe and the calamity intensified upon them, it was said to them, "Surrender to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." They consulted Abu Lubaba, and he signaled to them with his hand that it was slaughter. They said, "We will surrender to the judgment of Sa’d bin Mu’adh." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Surrender to the judgment of Sa’d bin Mu’adh." So they surrendered, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent for Sa’d. He was carried on a donkey of his that had a saddle made of palm fiber, and his people surrounded him. They began saying, "O Abu ‘Amr, your allies, your clients, and the people of influence and those whom you know..." He did not return a word to them until, when he drew near their dwellings, he turned to his people and said, "It has come for Sa’d that he does not fear, for the sake of Allah, the blame of any blamer." When he appeared before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), Abu Sa’id said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Stand up for your leader and help him down." ‘Umar said, "Our leader is Allah." He said, "Help him down." So they helped him down. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him, "Judge regarding them." He said, "I judge regarding them that their fighters be killed, their offspring be taken captive, and their wealth be divided." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "You have judged regarding them with the judgment of Allah and the judgment of His Messenger." He said: Then Sa’d supplicated to Allah and said, "O Allah, if You have left any of the war of Quraysh for Your Prophet, then keep me for it. And if You have ended the war between him and them, then take me to You." She said: His wound burst open, and it had healed until there remained of it nothing but like the size of a ring. She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned, and Sa’d returned to his tent which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had pitched for him. She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar attended to him. She said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I recognize the weeping of Abu Bakr from the weeping of ‘Umar while I am in my chamber, and they were as Allah said: "Merciful among themselves." ‘Alqama said: I said, "O Mother, how did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) act?" She said, "His eye would not shed tears for anyone, but when he was distressed, he would take hold of his beard."
