Hadith 36:263

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, he said: ‘Asim ibn ‘Umar ibn Qatadah narrated to me, he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) slept when evening came, Gabriel—or he said an angel—came to him and said: "Which man from your nation died tonight, for the inhabitants of the heaven rejoiced at his death?" He said: "I do not know, unless it be Sa’d, for he was ill this evening. What happened to Sa’d?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has been taken [in death]." His people came and carried him to their house. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed the dawn prayer, then he went out and the people went out. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) hurried the people while walking, to the extent that the straps of their sandals were breaking from their feet and their cloaks were falling from their shoulders. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, you have hurried the people." He said: "I fear that the angels will reach him before us, just as they reached Hanzalah before us." Muhammad said: Ash’ath ibn Ishaq informed me, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was present while he was being washed. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) drew his knees together and said: "An angel has entered, and there was no place for him to sit, so I made room for him." His mother was weeping and saying: "Woe to the mother of Sa’d, Sa’d! [He was] virtuous and generous, after favors he had and glory, a leader who filled a gap." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Every weeping woman lies except the mother of Sa’d." Muhammad said: Some of our companions said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out for his funeral, some of the hypocrites said: "How light the bier of Sa’d—or the funeral of Sa’d—is!" Sa’d ibn Ibrahim narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said on the day Sa’d died: "Seventy thousand angels have descended who witnessed the funeral of Sa’d; they had never stepped upon the earth before that day." Muhammad said: I heard Isma’il ibn Muhammad ibn Sa’d, and he entered the tent upon us while we were burying Waqid ibn ‘Amr ibn Sa’d ibn Mu’adh, and he said: "Shall I not tell you what I heard our elders say? I heard our elders narrating that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said on the day Sa’d died: 'Seventy thousand angels have descended who witnessed the funeral of Sa’d; they had never stepped upon the earth before that day.'" Muhammad said: My father informed me, from his father, from ‘Aishah, she said: "There was no one whose loss was more severe upon the Muslims after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his two companions—or one of them—than Sa’d ibn Mu’adh." Muhammad said: Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Sharhabil, that a man took a handful of the soil of Sa’d’s grave that day, and he opened it later, and it was musk. Muhammad said: Waqid ibn ‘Amr ibn Sa’d narrated to me, and Waqid was one of the most handsome and tallest of people. He said: I entered upon Anas ibn Malik, and he said to me: "Who are you?" I said: "I am Waqid ibn ‘Amr ibn Sa’d ibn Mu’adh." He said: "May Allah have mercy on Sa’d; you are similar to Sa’d." Then he said: "May Allah have mercy on Sa’d; he was one of the most handsome and tallest of people." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent to Ukaydir of Dumah, and he sent him a silk garment woven with gold. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wore it, then he stood on the pulpit and sat, and he did not speak. The people began to touch the garment and marvel at it. He said: "Do you marvel at this?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have never seen a garment better than it." He said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the handkerchiefs of Sa’d ibn Mu’adh in Paradise are better than what you see."
