Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:30

Abu Usama narrated to us, he said: Al-A’mash narrated to us, he said: ‘Abbad narrated to us, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: When Abu Talib became ill, a group of Quraysh entered upon him, among them Abu Jahl. They said: "Your nephew insults our gods, and does this and that, and says this and that. If you would send for him and forbid him." So he sent for him—or he said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came and entered the house, and between them and Abu Talib was the space of one man. Abu Jahl feared that if the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat next to Abu Talib, he would be more tender toward him, so he jumped up and sat in that space. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not find a seat near his uncle, so he sat by the door. Abu Talib said: "O my nephew, what is the matter with your people? They complain about you, claiming that you insult their gods and say this and that, and do this and that." They persisted in their badgering of him. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spoke and said: "O my uncle, I only want them to agree to one word, by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them the tribute (jizya)." They were alarmed by his word and his statement. The people said: "One word? Yes, by your father, and ten!" Abu Talib said: "And what word is it, O my nephew?" He said: "La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)." They stood up in alarm, shaking their garments, saying: "Has he made the gods one god? Indeed, this is a strange thing." He said: And he recited from this point until his saying: "Nay, but they have not yet tasted My punishment."
