Hadith 36:305
Abu Usama narrated to us, he said: Hisham narrated to us, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out to al-Hudaybiyah, and al-Hudaybiyah was in Shawwal. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out until, when he was at Usfan, a man from Banu Ka'b met him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have left Quraysh, and they have gathered their Ahabish (allies) for you, feeding them *al-khazir* (a dish of flour and meat), intending to block you from the House." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out until, when he emerged from Usfan, Khalid ibn al-Walid met them as the vanguard for Quraysh, and he confronted them on the road. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Come this way." So he took a path between two *sarwa'atayn*—meaning two trees—and turned away from the main road until he descended at al-Ghamim. When he descended at al-Ghamim, he addressed the people. He praised Allah and extolled Him as He deserves, then said: "To proceed: Quraysh has gathered their Ahabish for you, feeding them *al-khazir*, intending to block us from the House. So advise me on what you see: do you think we should head toward the head—meaning the people of Makkah—or do you think we should head toward those who aided them, and go behind them to their women and children? If they sit, they will sit grieving and defeated, and if they pursue us, they will pursue us in a weak and scattered manner. May Allah disgrace them." Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you head toward the head, Allah will aid you, Allah will grant you victory, and Allah will manifest you." Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, while he was at his mount, said: "We, by Allah, will not say to you as the Children of Israel said to their Prophet: 'So go you and your Lord and fight, we are sitting here,' but rather: 'Go you and your Lord and fight, we are fighting with you.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out until, when he reached the Sanctuary and entered its boundaries, his she-camel, al-Jada'a, knelt down. They said: "She has become stubborn (*khala'at*)." He said: "She has not become stubborn, and stubbornness is not her habit, but the One who restrained the Elephant has restrained her from Makkah. Do not let Quraysh call me to honor the sacred things, and then they precede me to it. Come this way," to his companions. So he took to the right, into a mountain pass called Dhat al-Hanzal, until he descended upon al-Hudaybiyah. When he descended, the people drew water from the well, and it was drained and did not suffice them. They complained of that to him, so he gave them an arrow from his quiver and said: "Plant it in the well." They planted it in the well, and it surged and its water overflowed until the people drank to their fill. When Quraysh heard of him, they sent to him the brother of Banu Hulays, and he was from a people who honor the sacrificial animals (*al-hady*). He said: "Send the sacrificial animals." When he saw the sacrificial animals, he did not speak a word to them and turned back from his place to Quraysh. He said: "O people, the garlands, the camels, and the sacrificial animals!" He warned them and magnified the matter for them. They insulted him and treated him harshly, saying: "You are only a coarse Bedouin; we do not wonder at you, but we wonder at ourselves for sending you. Sit down." Then they said to Urwah ibn Mas'ud: "Go to Muhammad, and let us not be brought from behind you." Urwah went out until he came to him and said: "O Muhammad, I have not seen a man from the Arabs who marched toward what you marched toward. You have marched with the rabble of the people against your kin and your own people, who have branched out from you, to destroy their very roots. You know that I have come to you from Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy and 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy; they have put on leopard skins near the *'awdh* (camels) that have young ones, swearing by Allah that they will not face a situation except that they will offer you a matter regarding it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "We have not come for war, but we wanted to perform our 'Umrah and slaughter our sacrificial animals. Would you like to go to your people? For they are a people of *qatb* (hardship/poverty), and war has frightened them, and there is no good for them in war eating them as it has already eaten. Let them leave me and the House, so we may perform our 'Umrah and slaughter our sacrificial animals, and let them set a period between me and them in which we will leave their women and their travelers will be safe, and they leave me and the people. For I, by Allah, will fight for this matter against the red and the black until Allah manifests me or my neck is severed. If the people strike me, that is what they want, and if Allah manifests me over them, they will choose either to fight while prepared or to enter into peace while intact." He said: Urwah returned to Quraysh and said: "You know, by Allah, there is no people on earth more beloved to me than you. You are my brothers and the most beloved of people to me. I have sought victory for you from the people in the gatherings, and when they did not aid you, I came to you with my family until I descended with you, desiring to be with you. By Allah, I do not love life after you. You know that the man has offered a fair deal, so accept it. You know that I have come to kings and seen the great ones, and I swear by Allah, I have not seen a king or a great one more exalted among his companions than him. Not a man among them speaks until he asks his permission; if he permits him, he speaks, and if he does not permit him, he remains silent. Then, he performs ablution, and they rush to his ablution water and wipe it on their heads, taking it as a blessing." When they heard his statement, they sent to him Suhayl ibn 'Amr and Mikraz ibn Hafs. They said: "Go to Muhammad, and if he gives you what Urwah mentioned, then make a treaty with him that he returns this year from us and does not reach the House until those who hear of his march from the Arabs hear that we have blocked him." Suhayl and Mikraz went out until they came to him and mentioned that to him, and he gave them what they asked for. He said: "Write: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'" They said: "By Allah, we will never write this." He said: "Then how?" They said: "Write: 'In Your name, O Allah.'" He said: "And this, write it." So they wrote it. Then he said: "Write: 'This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.'" They said: "By Allah, we do not differ except in this." He said: "What shall I write?" They said: "State your lineage, so write: 'Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah.'" He said: "And this is good, write it." So they wrote it. It was in their condition that between us is the *'aybah al-makfufah* (the covered chest/secret), and that there are no *aghlal* (armor) and no *aslal* (swords). Abu Usama said: *Aghlal* are armors, and *aslal* are swords. By the *'aybah al-makfufah*, he meant his companions, that he would restrain them from them. And that whoever comes to you from us, you shall return him to us, and whoever comes to us from you, we shall not return him to you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And whoever enters with me, he has the same condition as mine." Quraysh said: "Whoever enters with us, he is from us and has the same condition as ours." Banu Ka'b said: "We are with you, O Messenger of Allah," and Banu Bakr said: "We are with Quraysh." While they were at the document, Abu Jandal came, dragging his chains. The Muslims said: "This is Abu Jandal." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He is for me." Suhayl said: "He is for me." Suhayl said: "Read the document." When it was read, it was for Suhayl. Abu Jandal said: "O Messenger of Allah, O assembly of Muslims, am I to be returned to the polytheists?" 'Umar said: "O Abu Jandal, this is the sword, for it is only a man and a man." Suhayl said: "Have you aided against me, O 'Umar?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Suhayl: "Grant him to me." He said: "No." He said: "Then grant him to me as a favor." He said: "No." Mikraz said: "I have granted him to you, O Muhammad," but he did not succeed.
