Hadith 36:309

'Abd al-Rahim ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Ash'ath, from 'Ata', who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went out to perform 'Umrah until he reached al-Hudaybiyah. The Quraysh went out to him and turned him away from the House, until there was speech and dispute between them, to the point that there was almost fighting between them. He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, took the pledge of allegiance from his companions—and their number was one thousand five hundred—under the tree, and that was the day of the Pledge of al-Ridwan. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, made a peace treaty with them. The Quraysh said: "We will make a peace treaty with you on the condition that you slaughter the sacrificial animals where you are, shave your head, and return. Then, when the coming year arrives, we will clear Makkah for you for three days." So he did that. He said: They went out to 'Ukaz and stayed there for three days. They stipulated that he should not enter it with weapons except for the sword, and that he should not take anyone from the people of Makkah if they wanted to leave with him. So he slaughtered the sacrificial animals where he was, shaved his head, and returned. Then, when those days arrived the following year, he entered Makkah and brought the sacrificial camels with him, and the people came with him. He entered the Sacred Mosque, and Allah revealed to him: "Allah has certainly shown to His Messenger the vision in truth: you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety." He said: And He revealed to him: "The sacred month for the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you." So He made it lawful for them, if they fought him in the Sacred Mosque, to fight them. Then Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn 'Amr came to him, and he was shackled; his father had shackled him, so he returned him to his father.
