Hadith 36:317

Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, from Musa ibn Ubaydah, from Iyas ibn Salamah, from his father, who said: Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn Amr, Huwaytib ibn Abd al-Uzza, and Mikraz ibn Hafs to the Prophet, peace be upon him, to make peace with him. When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saw them, and Suhayl was among them, he said: "Your matter has become easy; the people have come to you with their kinship ties and are asking you for peace. So send the sacrificial animals and manifest the Talbiyah, perhaps that will soften their hearts." So they recited the Talbiyah from the corners of the camp until their voices resonated with the Talbiyah. He said: So they came to him and asked for peace. He said: While the people had made a truce, and there were people from the polytheists among the Muslims, and people from the Muslims among the polytheists, Abu Sufyan acted treacherously, and suddenly the valley was flowing with men and weapons. Iyas said: Salamah said: I came with six of the polytheists, armed, driving them, while they possessed neither benefit nor harm for themselves. We brought them to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and he did not strip them nor kill them, and he pardoned them. He said: We then pressed upon those of ours who were in the hands of the polytheists, and we did not leave a single man of ours among them except that we rescued him. He said: And we prevailed over those of them who were in our hands. Then Quraysh came to Suhayl ibn Amr and Huwaytib ibn Abd al-Uzza, and they took charge of their peace. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent Ali and Talhah, and Ali wrote between them: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has made peace with Quraysh upon: He has made peace with them on the condition that there shall be no treachery and no stealing, and that whoever comes to Makkah from the companions of Muhammad as a pilgrim, or an Umrah performer, or seeking the bounty of Allah, he is safe regarding his blood and his wealth. And whoever comes to Madinah from Quraysh, passing through to Egypt or to the Levant, seeking the bounty of Allah, he is safe regarding his blood and his wealth. And on the condition that whoever comes to Muhammad from Quraysh, he is to be returned, and whoever comes to them from the companions of Muhammad, he is theirs." This was difficult for the Muslims, so the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever comes to them from us, may Allah distance him, and whoever comes to us from them, we will return him to them; Allah knows the Islam within his soul, and Allah will make for him a way out." And they made peace with him on the condition that he performs Umrah the following year in the same month, and that they do not enter upon us with horses or weapons, except for what a traveler carries in his scabbard, and he shall stay there for three nights. And on the condition that these sacrificial animals, wherever we have detained them, that is their place of slaughter, and they shall not be brought forward to us. So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "We shall drive them, and you shall turn their faces back."
