Hadith 36:321
Khalid bin Makhlad narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Aziz al-Ansari narrated to me, he said: Ibn Shihab narrated to me, he said: Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out in the year of al-Hudaybiyyah with one thousand and eight hundred [men]. He sent ahead of him a scout from Khuza'ah named Najiyah to bring him news of the people, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) descended at a pond in Usfan called Ghadir al-Astat. His scout met him at Ghadir al-Astat and said: "O Muhammad, I left your people, Ka'b bin Lu'ayy and 'Amir bin Lu'ayy, having mobilized the Ahabish and those who obey them against you; they have heard of your march. I left their cattle eating the *khazir* (a type of plant) in their homes, and this is Khalid bin al-Walid with cavalry they have sent." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and said: "What do you say? What do you see? Advise me. The news of Quraysh has come to you twice, and [you know] what they have done. This is Khalid bin al-Walid at al-Ghamim." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: "Do you see that we should proceed to our destination and fight those who block us from the House, or do you see that we should turn against those they left behind? If we follow them, Allah will cut off a neck from them." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, the matter is your matter, and the opinion is your opinion." So they turned to the right in this action, and neither Khalid nor the cavalry with him perceived it until they had passed the army's flank. His she-camel brought him to a mountain pass that descends upon the valley of the people, called Baldah. It knelt down, so he said: "Hal, hal!" but it did not move. They said: "Al-Qaswa has become stubborn." He said: "By Allah, it has not become stubborn, nor is that its nature, but the One who restrained the Elephant has restrained it. By Allah, they will not invite me today to a plan in which they honor the sanctity [of the House] and invite me to a connection (kinship/peace) except that I will answer them." Then he urged it, and it jumped up. He returned from where he came, retracing his steps, until he descended with the people at a well among the wells of al-Hudaybiyyah, which had little water. The people were drawing its water sparingly. They complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the scarcity of water, so he pulled an arrow from his quiver and ordered a man to stick it into the bottom of the well. It gushed with water until the people drank their fill. While he was in that state, Budayl bin Warqa' al-Khuza'i passed by him with a group of his people from Khuza'ah. He said: "O Muhammad, these are your people; they have gone out with their suckling camels, swearing by Allah that they will stand between you and Makkah until not one of them remains." He said: "O Budayl, I have not come to fight anyone. I have only come to perform my rites and circumambulate this House. Otherwise, do the Quraysh have anything else? Do they have [the option] to grant me a period of time in which they can be safe and rest, and leave me and the people alone? If my affair prevails over the people during that time, they will have the choice to enter into what the people have entered into, or to fight while they are gathered and prepared." Budayl said: "I will present this to your people." Budayl rode until he passed by Quraysh. They said: "Where from?" He said: "I have come to you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and if you wish, I will inform you of what I heard from him." Some of their foolish ones said: "Do not tell us anything about him," but some of their elders and wise men said: "Rather, tell us what you saw and what you heard." Budayl recounted to them the story of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and what he had offered them regarding the truce. Among the disbelievers of Quraysh that day was Urwah bin Mas'ud al-Thaqafi. He stood up and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, do you accuse me of anything? Am I not the father and you the children? Have I not mobilized the people of 'Ukaz for you? And when they turned against me, I came to you with myself, my children, and those who obeyed me." They said: "Yes, you have done so." He said: "Then accept from Budayl what he has brought you and what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has offered you, and send me so that I may bring you confirmation of it from him." They said: "Go." Urwah went out until he descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at al-Hudaybiyyah. He said: "O Muhammad, these are your people, Ka'b bin Lu'ayy and 'Amir bin Lu'ayy; they have gone out with their suckling camels, swearing that they will not leave you and Makkah until their green [vegetation/people] is destroyed. You are between two options in fighting them: either your people are wiped out—and you have never heard of a man who wiped out his own roots before you—or they will betray you, those whom I see with you, for I see nothing with you but a rabble of people whose names and faces I do not know." Abu Bakr became angry and said: "Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Are we going to betray him or abandon him?" Urwah said: "By Allah, were it not for a favor you have done for me that I have not yet repaid, I would have answered you for what you said." (Urwah had borne a blood money payment, and Abu Bakr had helped him with a good contribution). Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah was standing over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with his armor on, so Urwah did not recognize him. Urwah was speaking to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and every time he reached out his hand to touch the beard of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), al-Mughirah would strike it with the handle of his sword that was in his hand. When he brought it out, he said: "Who is this?" They said: "This is al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah." Urwah said: "Is that you, O traitor? Have you not washed away your treachery of yesterday at 'Ukaz?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Urwah bin Mas'ud the same as he had said to Budayl. Urwah stood up and went out until he came to his people and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, I have visited kings: Caesar in his kingdom in Syria, the Negus in the land of Abyssinia, and Chosroes in Iraq. And by Allah, I have never seen a king who is more exalted among his people than Muhammad is among his companions. By Allah, they do not dare to look at him, they do not raise their voices in his presence, and he does not perform ablution but they rush to it, each of them trying to obtain something from it. So accept what Budayl has brought you, for it is a path of guidance." They said: "Sit down." They called a man from Banu al-Harith bin 'Abd Manaf called al-Hulays and said: "Go and see what this man is about and what he meets you with." Al-Hulays went out. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him approaching, he recognized him and said: "This is al-Hulays, and he is from a people who honor the sacrificial animals, so send the sacrificial animals in his path." They sent the sacrificial animals in his path. Ibn Shihab said: The narration differs regarding al-Hulays; some say he came to him and he said to him the same as he said to Budayl and Urwah, and others say that when he saw the sacrificial animals, he returned to Quraysh and said: "I have seen a matter that, if you block him from it, I fear for you that a calamity will befall you. So look to your own insight." They said: "Sit down." They called a man from Quraysh called Mikraz bin Hafs bin al-Ahnaf from Banu 'Amir bin Lu'ayy and sent him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him, he said: "This is a treacherous man who looks with a [treacherous] eye." He said to him the same as he said to Budayl and his companions regarding the truce. He came to them and informed them. Then they sent Suhayl bin 'Amr from Banu 'Amir bin Lu'ayy to write a treaty with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on what he had called for. Suhayl bin 'Amr came to him and said: "Quraysh has sent me to you to write a treaty on a matter that you and I are satisfied with." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Yes, write: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'" He said: "I do not know Allah, nor do I know the Most Gracious (al-Rahman), but write as we used to write: 'In Your name, O Allah.'" The people were distressed by that and said: "We will not write a treaty on a plan until you acknowledge the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." Suhayl said: "Then I will not write a treaty on a plan until I return." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Write: 'In Your name, O Allah. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.'" He said: "I do not acknowledge it. If I knew you were the Messenger of Allah, I would not have opposed you nor disobeyed you, but [write] 'Muhammad bin 'Abdullah'." The people were also distressed by that. He said: "Write: 'Muhammad bin 'Abdullah' [and] Suhayl bin 'Amr." 'Umar bin al-Khattab stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then why should we give in on our religion?" He said: "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I will not disobey Him, and He will not let me go to waste." Abu Bakr was standing to the side, so 'Umar came to him and said: "O Abu Bakr!" He said: "Yes." He said: "Are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then why should we give in on our religion?" He said: "Leave what you see, O 'Umar, for he is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Allah will not let him go to waste, and he will not disobey Him." It was in the conditions of the book that whoever among us came to you, if he was on your religion, you would return him to us, and whoever came to us from you, you would return him to you. He said: "As for whoever comes from me, I have no need to return him. And as for what you stipulated for yourself from me, between me and you..." While the people were in that state, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin 'Amr appeared, dragging his chains, having escaped from the lower part of Makkah, wearing his sword. Suhayl raised his head and saw his son, Abu Jandal. He said: "This is the first one I have made a treaty with you to return." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Suhayl, we have not finished the book yet." He said: "Then I will not write a treaty on a plan until we return him." He said: "Then it is your affair." Abu Jandal cried out to the people: "O assembly of Muslims, am I to be returned to the polytheists so they can tempt me away from my religion?" 'Umar clung to him, while his father took him by the hand, dragging him, and 'Umar was saying: "He is only a man, and you have the sword!" But his father took him away. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to return to them whoever came from them to enter his religion. When they gathered, Abu Basir was among them, and he returned him to them. They stayed on the seashore, and it was as if they had cut off the trade of Quraysh to Syria. They sent to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "We see it as a connection from you that you return them to you and gather them." So he returned them to him. Among what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wanted in the book was that they should let him enter Makkah to perform his rites and slaughter his sacrificial animals among them. They said: "Do not let the Arabs say that you took us by force, ever. But return this year, and when the next year comes, we will give you permission, and you shall perform 'Umrah and stay for three days." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and said to the people: "Stand up, slaughter your sacrificial animals, shave your heads, and exit the state of Ihram." Not a man stood up or moved. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered the people to do that three times, but not a man moved or stood from his place. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw that, he went to Umm Salamah—for he had taken her with him on that expedition—and said: "O Umm Salamah, what is the matter with the people? I ordered them three times to slaughter, shave, and exit Ihram, but not a man stood up to what I ordered him." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, go out yourself and do that." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up, went to his sacrificial animals, slaughtered them, and called for a barber, who shaved his head. When the people saw what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had done, they rushed to their sacrificial animals and slaughtered them, and some of them began shaving others until they almost crowded each other due to the congestion. Ibn Shihab said: The sacrificial animals that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions drove were seventy camels. Ibn Shihab said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) divided Khaybar among the people of al-Hudaybiyyah into eighteen shares, with one share for every hundred men.
