Hadith 36:366
Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah and Yahya ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Hatib, they both said: There was a truce between the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the polytheists. A battle took place in Mecca between the Banu Ka‘b and the Banu Bakr. The crier of the Banu Ka‘b came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "O Allah, I beseech Muhammad by the ancient alliance of our father and his father. So help us, may Allah guide you, with a ready help. And call the servants of Allah, they will come as reinforcements." A cloud passed by and thundered, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "This is thundering for the victory of the Banu Ka‘b." Then he said to ‘Aisha: "Prepare me, and do not let anyone know about that." Abu Bakr entered upon her and disapproved of some of her affairs, saying: "What is this?" She said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered me to prepare him." He said: "To where?" She said: "To Mecca." He said: "By Allah, the truce between us and them has not yet expired." Abu Bakr came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and mentioned it to him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "They were the first to break the treaty." Then he ordered the roads to be blocked, so they were held. Then he went out, and the Muslims went out with him. The people of Mecca were distressed, as no news reached them. Abu Sufyan said to Hakim ibn Hizam: "O Hakim, by Allah, we are distressed and anxious. Do you have it in you to ride between us and Marr [al-Zahran] so that perhaps we might encounter news?" Budayl ibn Warqa’ al-Ka‘bi from Khuza‘a said to him: "And I am with you." He said: "And you, if you wish." He said: So they rode until, when they drew near to the mountain pass of Marr, it grew dark. They overlooked the pass, and behold, fires had taken over the entire valley. Abu Sufyan said to Hakim: "What are these fires?" Budayl ibn Warqa’ said: "These are the fires of the Banu ‘Amr, the war has made them hungry." Abu Sufyan said: "No, by your father, the Banu ‘Amr are more humiliated and fewer than these." Then the Arak trees cleared from them, and the guards of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) seized them—a group of the Ansar. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab was on guard that night. They brought them to him, and they said: "We have brought you a group we seized from the people of Mecca." ‘Umar said, while laughing at them: "By Allah, if you had brought me Abu Sufyan, you would not have added anything." They said: "By Allah, we have brought you Abu Sufyan." He said: "Imprison him." So they imprisoned him until morning, then he brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It was said to him: "Accept Islam." He said: "I do not find anything but that, or something worse than it." So he accepted Islam. Then it was said to Hakim ibn Hizam: "Accept Islam." He said: "I will accept Islam, but you will not see me except standing." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "As for those before us, you will not see them except standing." When they turned away, Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a man who loves prestige," meaning honor. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, except Ibn Khatal, Miqyas ibn Subaba al-Laythi, ‘Abdullah ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi Sarh, and the two singing girls. If you find them clinging to the curtains of the Ka‘ba, kill them." He said: When they turned away, Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you had ordered Abu Sufyan to be imprisoned on the road and announced the departure to the people." Al-‘Abbas caught up with him and said: "Do you have it in you to sit until you see?" He said: "Yes." And that was only so that he would see his weakness and then seize them. Then Juhayna passed by, and he said: "O ‘Abbas, who are these?" He said: "This is Juhayna." He said: "What do I have to do with Juhayna? By Allah, there was never any war between me and them." Then Muzayna passed by, and he said: "O ‘Abbas, who are these?" He said: "This is Muzayna." He said: "What do I have to do with Muzayna? By Allah, there was never any war between me and them." Then Sulaym passed by, and he said: "O ‘Abbas, who are these?" He said: "This is Sulaym." Then the tribes of the Arabs began to pass by. Aslam and Ghifar passed by him, and he would ask about them, and al-‘Abbas would inform him, until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by in the rear of the people, among the first Emigrants and the Ansar, in armor that dazzled the sight. He said: "O ‘Abbas, who are these?" He said: "This is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) among the first Emigrants and the Ansar." He said: "Your nephew has become a king of great kingdom." He said: "No, by Allah, he is not a king, but it is Prophethood." They were ten thousand or twelve thousand. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) handed the banner to Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubada, then Sa‘d handed it to his son Qays ibn Sa‘d. Abu Sufyan rode and outpaced the people until he appeared to them from the mountain pass. The people of Mecca said to him: "What is behind you?" He said: "Behind me is the great multitude, behind me is what you have no power against, behind me is what I have never seen the like of. Whoever enters my house is safe." So people began to rush into his house. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived and stopped at al-Hajun at the upper part of Mecca. He sent al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam with the cavalry to the upper part of the valley, and he sent Khalid ibn al-Walid with the cavalry to the lower part of the valley. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "You are the best of Allah’s land and the most beloved of Allah’s land to Allah. By Allah, if I had not been driven out of you, I would not have left. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, and it will not be made lawful for anyone after me. It was only made lawful for me for an hour of the day, and this is my hour. It is sacred; its trees shall not be cut, its grass shall not be mowed, and its lost property shall not be picked up except by one who announces it." A man called Shah said to him—and the people were talking—al-‘Abbas said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, except the Idhkhir (lemon grass), for it is for our houses, our graves, and our smiths." As for Ibn Khatal, he was found clinging to the curtains of the Ka‘ba and was killed. As for Miqyas ibn Subaba, they found him between al-Safa and al-Marwa. A group from the Banu Ka‘b rushed to kill him, but his cousin Numayla said to him: "Leave him alone, for by Allah, no man shall draw near to him except that I strike him with this sword of mine until he cools down." So they backed away from him. Then he charged with his sword and split his head with it, and he disliked that anyone should boast over him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) circumambulated the House. Then ‘Uthman ibn Talha entered, and he said: "O ‘Uthman, where is the key?" He said: "It is with my mother, Salama bint Sa‘d." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent for her, and she said: "No, by al-Lat and al-‘Uzza, I will never hand it to him." He said: "A matter has come other than the matter we were upon. If you do not do it, I and my brother will be killed." He said: So she handed it to him. He said: He brought it, and when he was opposite the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he stumbled and the key fell from him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up to him and covered him with his garment. Then ‘Uthman opened it for him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered the Ka‘ba. He said "Allahu Akbar" in its corners and its sides, and praised Allah. Then he prayed two rak‘ahs between the two pillars. Then he went out and stood between the two doors. ‘Ali said: I stretched out for it, hoping that the key would be handed to us so that the watering of the pilgrims and the guardianship would be with us. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Where is ‘Uthman? Here is what Allah has given you." He handed the key to him. Then Bilal climbed onto the roof of the Ka‘ba and gave the Adhan. Khalid ibn Asid said: "What is this sound?" They said: "Bilal ibn Rabah." He said: "The slave of Abu Bakr, the Abyssinian?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Where?" They said: "On the roof of the Ka‘ba." He said: "On the watchtower of the Banu Abi Talha?" They said: "Yes." He said: "What is he saying?" They said: "He is saying: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.'" He said: "Allah has honored Abu Khalid too much to hear this sound," meaning his father, who was among those killed on the day of Badr among the polytheists. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to Hunayn, and Hawazin gathered for him at Hunayn. They fought, and the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were defeated. Allah said: "And on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it availed you nothing..." (the verse). Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) descended from his mount and said: "O Allah, if You wish, You will not be worshipped after today. May the faces be disgraced." Then he threw pebbles at them that were in his hand, and they turned away in retreat. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took the captives and the wealth. He said to them: "If you wish, then ransom, and if you wish, then captivity." They said: "We will not prefer anything over our lineage today." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When I go out, ask me, for I will give you what is mine, and it will not be difficult for any of the Muslims." When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out, they shouted to him. He said: "As for what is mine, I have given it to you." The Muslims said the same, except ‘Uyayna ibn Hisn ibn Hudhayfa ibn Badr, for he said: "As for what is mine, I will not give it." He said: "You are entitled to your share of that." He said: So he ended up with a one-eyed old woman that day. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) besieged the people of Ta’if for nearly a month. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "O Messenger of Allah, let me enter upon them and call them to Allah." He said: "They will fight you." Then ‘Urwa entered upon them and called them to Allah, and a man from the Banu Malik shot him with an arrow and killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "His example among his people is like the companion of Yasin." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Take their livestock and tighten the siege on them." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned, and when he was at Nakhla, the people began to ask him. Anas said: Until they pulled his cloak from his back, and they revealed his back, which was like the slice of the moon. He said: "Give me back my cloak, may you have no father! Do you think I am stingy? By Allah, if I had as many camels and sheep as what is between these two, I would have given them to you." He gave the Mu’allafa (those whose hearts are to be reconciled) one hundred camels each that day, and he gave to the people. The Ansar said something about that, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called them and said: "You said such and such. Did I not find you astray, and Allah guided you through me?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Did I not find you enemies, and Allah brought your hearts together through me?" They said: "Yes." He said: "If you had wished, you could have said: 'You came to us forsaken, and we helped you.'" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are more worthy." He said: "If you had wished, you could have said: 'You came to us driven out, and we gave you shelter.'" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are more worthy." He said: "If you had wished, you could have said: 'You came to us poor, and we comforted you.'" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are more worthy." He said: "Are you not pleased that the people go back with sheep and camels, while you go back with the Messenger of Allah to your homes?" They said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The people are the outer garment, and the Ansar are the inner garment." He appointed ‘Abbad ibn Waqsh, a brother of the Banu ‘Abd al-Ashhal, over the distribution. A man from Aslam came naked, with no garment on him, and said: "Clothe me with a garment from these garments." He said: "These are only the distributions of the Muslims, and it is not lawful for me to give you anything from them." His people said: "Clothe him with a garment from them, and if anyone speaks about it, it is from our share and our gifts." So he gave him a garment. This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he said: "I did not fear this for him; I did not fear you for him." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not give it to him until his people said: 'If anyone speaks about it, it is from our share and our gifts.'" He said: "May Allah reward you with good, may Allah reward you with good."
