Hadith 36:368

Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Ikrimah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made a truce with the people of Makkah, Khuza’ah were allies of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the Jahiliyyah, and Banu Bakr were allies of Quraysh. Khuza’ah entered into the peace of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Banu Bakr entered into the peace of Quraysh. Fighting occurred between Khuza’ah and Banu Bakr, and Quraysh aided them with weapons and food, and they sheltered them. Banu Bakr prevailed over Khuza’ah and killed some of them. Quraysh feared that they had broken the pact, so they said to Abu Sufyan: "Go to Muhammad, renew the alliance, and make peace between the people." Abu Sufyan set out until he arrived in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Abu Sufyan has come to you, and he will return satisfied without having achieved his need." He came to Abu Bakr and said: "O Abu Bakr, renew the alliance and make peace between the people," or he said: "between your people." He said: "The matter is not mine; the matter belongs to Allah and His Messenger." He said—and he had said to him among what he said: "Is it not that a people who sheltered a people and aided them with weapons and food have broken the pact?" Abu Bakr said: "The matter belongs to Allah and His Messenger." Then he came to Umar ibn al-Khattab and said to him something similar to what he said to Abu Bakr. Umar said to him: "Have you broken it? Whatever of it was new, Allah has worn it out, and whatever of it was strong or firm, Allah has severed it." Abu Sufyan said: "I have not seen a day like today; a witness of the clan." Then he came to Fatimah and said: "O Fatimah, would you like to do something by which you would be the leader of the women of your people?" Then he mentioned to her something similar to what he mentioned to Abu Bakr. She said: "The matter is not mine; the matter belongs to Allah and His Messenger." Then he came to Ali and said to him something similar to what he said to Abu Bakr. Ali said to him: "I have not seen a day like today; you are a man who has gone astray. You are the leader of the people, so renew the alliance and make peace between the people." He said: "He struck one of his hands against the other and said: 'I have granted protection to the people from one another.'" Then he went until he arrived in Makkah and informed them of what he had done. They said: "By Allah, we have not seen a day like today; a delegate of a people. By Allah, you did not bring us war so that we might descend, nor did you bring us peace so that we might be secure. Go back." The delegate of Khuza’ah arrived to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him of what the people had done, and he called for victory and recited poetry to him regarding that: "O Lord, I am calling upon Muhammad, the ancient alliance of our father and his father. And a father you were, and we were children. Indeed, Quraysh have broken their promise to you, And they have broken your confirmed covenant. And they have set an ambush for me at Kada’. And you claimed that I would not call upon anyone, for they are more humiliated and fewer in number. And they came upon us at al-Watir while we were sleeping, reciting the Quran, bowing and prostrating. Then we became Muslims and did not withdraw a hand. So grant victory to the Messenger of Allah, a victory prepared. And send the soldiers of Allah to come as reinforcements, in a battalion like the sea, coming foaming. Among them is the Messenger of Allah, having stripped for action. If he is offered humiliation, his face turns dark." Hammad said: "Some of this poetry is from Ayyub, some from Yazid ibn Hazim, and most of it is from Muhammad ibn Ishaq." Then he returned to the hadith of Ayyub from Ikrimah, who said: Hassan ibn Thabit said: "It reached me, while I was not present at the valley of Makkah, that the baggage of Banu Ka’b had their necks cut. And Safwan, a twig cut from the base of his buttocks; that is the time of war, its knot has been tightened. So do not be anxious, O son of Umm Mujalid, for it has become clear, pure, and its molar has bitten. Would that I knew, would Suhayl ibn Amr ever attain its harm and its punishment?" He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered departure, so they departed and traveled until they descended at Marr. He said: Abu Sufyan came until he descended at Marr at night. He said: He saw the army and the fires and said: "Who are these?" It was said: "This is Tamim; they have settled in their lands and sought pasture in your lands." He said: "By Allah, these are more numerous than the people of Mina." When he knew that it was the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he said: "Guide me to al-Abbas." He came to al-Abbas and informed him of the news, and he took him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in a tent of his. He said to him: "O Abu Sufyan, accept Islam and you will be safe." He said: "What shall I do about al-Lat and al-Uzza?" Ayyub said: Abu al-Khayr narrated to me from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, he said: Umar ibn al-Khattab said to him while he was coming out of the tent with the sword on his neck: "Strike his neck! By Allah, if you were coming out of the tent, I would never have said it." Abu Sufyan said: "Who is this?" They said: "Umar ibn al-Khattab." Then he returned to the hadith of Ayyub from Ikrimah: Abu Sufyan accepted Islam, and al-Abbas took him to his house. When they reached the morning, the people rose for their purification. Abu Sufyan said: "O Abu al-Fadl, what is the matter with the people? Have they been ordered to do something?" He said: "No, but they have stood for prayer." He said: Al-Abbas ordered him, so he performed ablution, then he took him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the prayer, he said *Allahu Akbar*, and the people said *Allahu Akbar*. Then he bowed, and they bowed; then he rose, and they rose. Abu Sufyan said: "I have not seen a day like today; the obedience of a people whom he gathered from here and there—neither the Persians nor the Romans nor the people of the horns are more obedient to him than them." Hammad said: Yazid ibn Hazim claimed from Ikrimah that Abu Sufyan said: "O Abu al-Fadl, your nephew has become, by Allah, a great king." Al-Abbas said to him: "It is not kingship, but rather it is Prophethood." He said: "Either this or that." Then he returned to the hadith of Ayyub from Ikrimah, who said: Abu Sufyan said: "O morning of Quraysh!" Al-Abbas said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you would permit me, I would go to them and call them, grant them safety, and give Abu Sufyan something to be remembered by." Al-Abbas set out and rode the grey mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bring Abu Sufyan back to me, bring Abu Sufyan back to me, for the uncle of a man is like his father. I fear that Quraysh might do to him what Thaqif did to Urwah ibn Mas’ud; he called them to Allah and they killed him. By Allah, if they do that to him, I will surely ignite a fire upon them." Al-Abbas set out until he arrived in Makkah and said: "O people of Makkah, accept Islam and you will be safe. You have been reached by the grey mule." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had sent al-Zubayr from the upper part of Makkah and sent Khalid ibn al-Walid from the lower part of Makkah. Al-Abbas said to them: "This is al-Zubayr from the upper part of Makkah, and this is Khalid from the lower part of Makkah. And Khalid—what is Khalid! And Khuza’ah, the nose-cut ones." Then he said: "Whoever lays down his weapon is safe." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, and they exchanged some arrows. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prevailed over them, and he granted safety to the people except Khuza’ah from Banu Bakr. He mentioned four: Miqyas ibn Subabah, Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh, Ibn Khatal, and Sarah, the freedwoman of Banu Hashim. Hammad said: "Sarah is in the hadith of Ayyub and in the hadith of others." He said: Khuza’ah killed them until midday, and Allah revealed: "Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun the attack upon you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers. Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people and remove the fury in their hearts." Khuza’ah said: "And Allah turns in forgiveness to whom He wills."
