Hadith 36:417

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Abu Malik al-Ashja’i informed us, he said: Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out from one of his chambers and sat at its door. It was his habit that when he sat alone, no one would come to him until he called them. He said: "Call Abu Bakr for me." He came and sat before him, and he spoke privately with him for a long time. Then he ordered him, and he sat to his right or to his left. Then he said: "Call Umar for me." He came and sat in the place of Abu Bakr, and he spoke privately with him for a long time. Then Umar raised his voice and said: "O Messenger of Allah, they are the head of disbelief! They are the ones who claimed that you are a sorcerer, and that you are a soothsayer, and that you are a liar, and that you are a fabricator." He did not leave out anything that the people of Makkah used to say except that he mentioned it. Then he ordered him to sit on the other side, so he sat, one of them to his right and the other to his left. Then he called the people and said: "Shall I not tell you the likeness of these two companions of yours?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He turned his face toward Abu Bakr and said: "Indeed, Ibrahim was softer in the cause of Allah than oil in milk." Then he turned to Umar and said: "Indeed, Nuh was sterner in the cause of Allah than stone, and the matter is the matter of Umar." So they prepared themselves and stood up. They followed Abu Bakr and said: "O Abu Bakr, we disliked asking Umar what it was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spoke to you about privately." He said: "He said to me: 'How do you advise me regarding the expedition to Makkah?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are your people.' He said—until I saw that he would obey me." He said: "Then he called Umar, and Umar said: 'They are the head of disbelief,' until he mentioned every evil thing they used to say. 'And by Allah, the Arabs will not be humiliated until the people of Makkah are humiliated. So I command you to perform Jihad, and you shall surely invade Makkah.'"
