Hadith 36:432

Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Aswad ibn Shayban, from Khalid ibn Samir, who said: Abdullah ibn Rabah al-Ansari came to us—and the Ansar used to seek his legal understanding—and he said: Abu Qatadah, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), narrated to us, saying: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent the army of the commanders and said: "Upon you is Zayd ibn Harithah. If Zayd is struck down, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. If Ja'far is struck down, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah." Ja'far jumped up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not fear that you would appoint Zayd over me." He said: "Proceed, for you do not know which of that is better." So they departed and stayed for as long as Allah willed. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) ascended the pulpit and ordered that it be called: "Prayer is a gathering." The people gathered to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he said: "A reward has come, a reward has come, a reward has come" (three times). "I inform you about this army of yours that went out to fight. They departed and met the enemy, and Zayd was killed as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him. Then the standard was taken by Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, and he charged at the people until he was killed as a martyr—bear witness to his martyrdom and seek forgiveness for him. Then the standard was taken by Abdullah ibn Rawahah, and he planted his feet until he was killed as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him. Then the standard was taken by Khalid ibn al-Walid, and he was not one of the commanders, but he took command of himself." Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "O Allah, he is a sword from Your swords, so You grant him victory." From that day he was called the Sword of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Go forth and aid your brothers, and let no one among you remain behind." So they went forth, on foot and mounted, and that was in intense heat. While they were one night leaning away from the road, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) became drowsy until he leaned from his saddle. I came to him and supported him with my hand. When he felt the touch of a man's hand, he straightened up and said: "Who is this?" I said: "Abu Qatadah." He said—in the second or third time—"I do not see myself but that I have burdened you since the night." I said: "No, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, but I see that fatigue and drowsiness have burdened you. If you would turn aside and dismount until your fatigue passes." He said: "I fear that the people will be abandoned." I said: "No, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He said: "Find us a place of shade." I turned aside from the road, and behold, I was at a cluster of trees. I came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is a cluster of trees that I have found." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) turned aside, and those who were with him from the people of the road turned aside with him. They dismounted and hid from the road behind the cluster. We did not wake up except by the sun rising upon us. We stood up, and we were terrified. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Slowly, slowly," until the sun rose high. Then he said: "Whoever used to pray these two rak'ahs before the morning prayer, let him pray them." So those who used to pray them prayed them. Then he ordered that the prayer be called, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stepped forward and led us in prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: "We praise Allah; we were not in any matter of the world that occupied us from our prayer, but our souls were in the hand of Allah; He sends them whenever He wills. Beware, whoever is overtaken by this prayer from a righteous servant, let him perform its like along with it." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, the thirst." He said: "No thirst, O Abu Qatadah. Show me the water vessel." I brought it to him, and he placed it in his armpit, then he put his mouth to its opening—and Allah knows best whether he blew into it or not—then he said: "O Abu Qatadah, show me the vessel on the mount." I brought him a cup between two cups, and he poured into it. He said: "Give the people to drink." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called out and raised his voice: "Whoever has his vessel come to him, let him drink." I went to a man and gave him to drink, then I returned to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with the remainder of the cup. I went and gave to drink to the one next to him until I had given to drink to the people of that circle. Then I returned to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with the remainder of the cup. I went and gave to drink to another circle until I had given to drink to seven groups. I began to stretch myself to see if anything remained in it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) poured into the cup and said to me: "Drink." I said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I do not find much thirst in myself." He said: "Away with you, for I am the one giving the people to drink since today." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) poured into the cup and drank, then he poured into the cup and drank, then he poured into the cup and drank. Then he mounted and we mounted. Then he said: "How do you see the people acted when they lost their Prophet and their prayer overwhelmed them?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Is Abu Bakr and Umar not among them? If they obey them, they have been guided and their mother has been guided, and if they disobey them, they have gone astray and their mother has gone astray." He said it three times. Then he traveled and we traveled until, when we were at the peak of midday, behold, there were people following the shadows of the trees. We came to them, and behold, they were people from the Muhajirun, among them Umar ibn al-Khattab. We said to them: "How did you act when you lost your Prophet and your prayer overwhelmed you?" They said: "We, by Allah, will tell you." Umar jumped up and said to Abu Bakr: "Allah said in His Book: 'Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die.' And I, by Allah, do not know, perhaps Allah has taken His Prophet. So stand up and pray, and depart. I will look after you and resist, and if I see something, otherwise I will join you." He said: "And the prayer was established, and the narration ended."
