Hadith 36:463

Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from ‘Asim ibn ‘Umar ibn Qatadah, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) distributed the captives at al-Ji’ranah, he gave gifts to Quraysh and other Arabs, and there was nothing of it for the Ansar. The talk increased and spread, until one of them said: "As for the Messenger of Allah, he has met his people." He said: So he sent for Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah and said: "What is this talk that has reached me regarding your people, which they have increased in?" Sa’d said to him: "It is as what has reached you." He said: "And where do you stand regarding that?" He said: "I am but a man from my people." He said: His anger intensified, and he said: "Gather your people, and let no one be with them other than them." He said: So he gathered them in one of the enclosures of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he stood at its door, and he would not let anyone enter except those who were from his people, and he left out men from the Muhajirun and added others. He said: Then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came, and anger was recognizable on his face. He said: "O assembly of Ansar, did I not find you astray, then Allah guided you?" They began saying: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger." "O assembly of Ansar, did I not find you poor, then Allah enriched you?" They began saying: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger." "O assembly of Ansar, did I not find you enemies, then Allah brought your hearts together?" They said: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger." He said: "Will you not answer?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are more gracious and more virtuous." When his anger subsided, he said: "If you wished, you could have said—and you would have spoken the truth—'Did we not find you a fugitive, and we gave you shelter? And called a liar, and we believed you? And poor, and we comforted you? And forsaken, and we helped you?'" They began to weep and say: "Allah and His Messenger are more gracious and more virtuous." He said: "Are you disturbed by something of the world that I gave to a people to reconcile them to Islam, while I entrusted you to your Islam? If the people traveled through a valley or a mountain pass, and you traveled through a valley or a mountain pass, I would travel through your valley or your mountain pass. You are the inner garment, and the people are the outer garment. And were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man from the Ansar." Then he raised his hands until I could see what was under his armpits, and he said: "O Allah, forgive the Ansar, and the sons of the sons of the Ansar." "Are you not satisfied that the people go away with sheep and camels, while you go away with the Messenger of Allah to your homes?" The people wept until they soaked their beards, and they departed saying: "We are satisfied with Allah as a Lord, and with His Messenger as a portion and a share."
