Hadith 36:487

Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from his father, from Nafi’, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, Abu Bakr was in a part of Medina. He came and entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was covered. He placed his mouth upon the forehead of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and began to kiss him and weep, saying: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; you were pure in life and you are pure in death." When he went out, he passed by ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, who was saying: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has not died, and he will not die until Allah kills the hypocrites." He said: And they (the hypocrites) had rejoiced at the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and had raised their heads. He (Abu Bakr) said: "O man, be gentle with yourself, for the Messenger of Allah has indeed died. Have you not heard Allah say: 'Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die' (39:30)? And He said: 'And We did not grant to any man before you eternity [on earth]; so if you die, would they be the eternal ones?' (21:34)." He said: Then he came to the pulpit and ascended it. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "O people, if Muhammad was your god whom you worshipped, then your god has died. But if your god is the God who is in the heaven, then your God has not died." Then he recited: "Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]?" (3:144), until he finished the verse. Then he descended, and the Muslims rejoiced at that, and their relief intensified, while depression seized the hypocrites. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, it was as if there were coverings upon our faces, and they were removed.
