Hadith 36:509

37043: Abd al-A’la narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, from Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Bakr, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: I used to frequent Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf while we were in Mina with Umar ibn al-Khattab, teaching Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf the Quran. I came to him at his residence and did not find him, so it was said, "He is with the Commander of the Faithful." I waited for him until he came, and he said to me, "He has been angry today with an anger the likes of which I have not seen since he became [ruler]." He said: I said, "Why is that?" He said: "It reached him that two men from the Ansar mentioned the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr and said, 'By Allah, it was nothing but a *falta* (a sudden, unplanned occurrence). What prevents a man, if this one dies, from going to whom he loves and striking his hand [in allegiance], so it becomes as it was?'" He said: Umar intended to speak to the people. He said: I said, "Do not do it, O Commander of the Faithful, for you are in a land where the remnants of all the Arabs have gathered. If you say a statement, it will be carried from you and spread throughout the entire earth, and you do not know what will come of that. Only those whom you know will return to Medina will assist you." When we arrived in Medina, I went out early until I took hold of the right side of the pulpit, and Sa’id ibn Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl came to me and sat with me. I said, "He will surely say today what he has not said since he was appointed successor." He said, "And what could he possibly say?" I said, "You will hear that." When the people gathered, Umar went out until he sat on the pulpit. Then he praised Allah and extolled Him, then he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and invoked blessings upon him. Then he said: "Allah kept the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) among us, and the revelation from Allah would descend upon him, through which He would make lawful and unlawful. Then Allah took His Messenger, and He raised from it what He willed to raise, and kept from it what He willed to keep. We clung to some of it, and some of it escaped us. Among what we used to recite from the Quran was: 'Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is disbelief in you to turn away from your fathers.' And the verse of stoning was revealed, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stoned, and we stoned with him. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have memorized it, learned it, and understood it. Were it not for the fact that it would be said, 'Umar wrote in the Mushaf what is not in it,' I would have written it with my own hand." "Stoning is in three categories: pregnancy, or confession by the perpetrator, or just witnesses, as Allah has commanded. It has reached me that men are saying regarding the caliphate of Abu Bakr that it was a *falta*. By my life, if it was so, yet Allah gave its good and warded off its evil. Beware of this, to which necks are stretched out as they are stretched out to Abu Bakr. It was the affair of the people that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) died, so we came, and it was said to us that the Ansar had gathered in [the hall of] Banu Sa’idah with Sa’d ibn Ubadah, pledging allegiance to him. I stood up, and Abu Bakr and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah stood up toward them, fearing that they might cause a rift in Islam." "We met two men of the Ansar, men of truth, Uwaym ibn Sa’idah and Ma’n ibn Adi. They said, 'Where are you going?' We said, 'To your people, because of what has reached us regarding their affair.' They said, 'Return, for you will not be opposed, and nothing you dislike will be brought to you.' We refused except to proceed, and I was organizing a speech I intended to deliver until we reached the people. They were gathered there around Sa’d ibn Ubadah, who was on a bed, ill. When we approached them, they spoke, saying, 'O company of Quraysh, an emir from us and an emir from you.' Al-Hubab ibn al-Mundhir stood up and said, 'I am the rubbed trunk and the protected palm tree. If you wish, by Allah, we will return it to its youth.' Abu Bakr said, 'Slowly, you people.'" "I went to speak, and he said, 'Be silent, O Umar.' He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, 'O company of Ansar, by Allah, we do not deny your virtue, nor your trial in Islam, nor your right that is due upon us. But you have known that this clan of Quraysh has a status among the Arabs that no one else has, and the Arabs will not gather except upon a man from them. So we are the emirs, and you are the ministers. Fear Allah, and do not split Islam, and do not be the first to innovate in Islam. Behold, I have chosen for you one of these two men: myself or Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, he is trustworthy for you.'" "He said: By Allah, there was nothing I wanted to say that he did not say on that day, except for this word. By Allah, to be killed and then brought back to life, and killed and brought back to life, without disobedience, is more beloved to me than to be an emir over a people among whom is Abu Bakr." "He said: Then I said, 'O company of Ansar, O company of Muslims, the most entitled of people to the affair of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after him is the second of two when they were in the cave, Abu Bakr, the clear forerunner.' Then I took his hand, and a man from the Ansar beat me to it and struck his hand [in allegiance] before I struck his hand. Then I struck his hand, and the people followed. They leaned on Sa’d ibn Ubadah, and the people said, 'Sa’d has been killed.' I said, 'Kill him, may Allah kill him.' Then we departed, and Allah had united the affair of the Muslims under Abu Bakr. By Allah, it was as you said: Allah gave its good and warded off its evil. So whoever calls for the like of it, he has no pledge of allegiance, nor does the one who pledges to him."
