Hadith 36:522
Waki’ and Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Isma’il bin Abi Khalid, from Zubayd bin al-Harith, that when death approached Abu Bakr, he sent for ‘Umar to appoint him as his successor. The people said, "You appoint over us a harsh, rough man, and if he were to rule over us, he would be harsher and rougher. What will you say to your Lord when you meet Him, having appointed ‘Umar over us?" Abu Bakr said, "Do you frighten me with my Lord? I will say: 'O Allah, I appointed over them the best of Your creation.'" Then he sent for ‘Umar and said, "I am advising you with a testament; if you preserve it, then know that Allah has a right by day which He does not accept by night, and Allah has a right by night which He does not accept by day. And He does not accept a supererogatory deed until the obligatory one is performed. The scales of those whose scales are heavy on the Day of Resurrection are only heavy because they followed the truth in the world and its weight upon them; and it is fitting for a scale in which only truth is placed that it be heavy. The scales of those whose scales are light on the Day of Resurrection are only light because they followed falsehood and its lightness upon them; and it is fitting for a scale in which only falsehood is placed that it be light. Allah mentioned the people of Paradise by the best of what they did and overlooked their evil deeds, so the speaker says, 'Would that I could reach those people.' And He mentioned the people of the Fire by the worst of what they did and rejected the good they did, so the speaker says, 'I am better than those people.' He mentioned the verse of mercy and the verse of punishment so that the believer may be hopeful and fearful, not wishing for other than the truth from Allah, and not casting his own hands into destruction. If you preserve my testament, there will be no absent thing more beloved to you than death; and if you neglect my testament, there will be no absent thing more hateful to you than death, and you will not be able to escape Him."
حدثنا وكيع وبن إدريس عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن زبيد بن الحارث أن أبا بكر حين حضره الموت أرسل إلى عمر يستخلفه فقال الناس تستخلف علينا فظا غليظا ولو قد ولينا كان أفظ وأغلظ فما تقول لربك إذا لقيته وقد استخلفت علينا عمر قال أبو بكر أبربي تخوفونني أقول اللهم استخلفت عليهم خير خلقك ثم أرسل إلى عمر فقال إني موصيك بوصية إن أنت حفظتها إن لله حقا بالنهار لا يقبله بالليل وإن لله حقا بالليل لا يقبله بالنهار وانه لا يقبل نافلة حتى تؤدى الفريضة وإنما ثقلت موازين من ثقلت موازينه يوم القيامة باتباعهم في الدنيا الحق وثقله عليهم وحق لميزان لا يوضع فيه إلا الحق أن يكون ثقيلا وإنما خفت موازين من خفت موازينه يوم القيامة باتباعهم الباطل وخفته عليهم وحق لميزان لا يوضع فيه إلا الباطل أن يكون خفيفا وان الله ذكر أهل الجنة بصالح ما عملوا وانه تجاوز عن سيئاتهم فيقول القائل ألا أبلغ هؤلاء وذكر أهل النار بأسوأ ما عملوا وانه رد عليهم صالح ما عملوا فيقول قائل أنا خير من هؤلاء وذكر آية الرحمة وآية العذاب ليكون المؤمن راغبا وراهبا لا يتمنى على الله غير الحق ولا يلقي بيده إلى التهلكة فإن أنت حفظت وصيتي لم يكن غائب أحب إليك من الموت وإن أنت ضيعت وصيتي لم يكن غائب أبغض إليك من الموت ولن تعجزه
