Hadith 36:525
Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Husayn, from ‘Amr ibn Maymun, who said: I came and ‘Umar was standing over Hudhayfah and ‘Uthman ibn Hunayf. He said, "Do you fear that you have burdened the land with what it cannot bear?" Hudhayfah said, "If I wished, I could have doubled my land." ‘Uthman said, "I have burdened my land with what it is capable of, and there is not much surplus in it." He said, "Look at what you have, lest you have burdened the land with what it cannot bear." Then he said, "By Allah, if Allah spares me, I will surely leave the widows of the people of Iraq needing no one after me, ever." He said: Only four days passed before he was struck. When he would enter the mosque, he would stand between the rows and say, "Straighten up." When they straightened up, he would step forward and say the *takbir*. He said: When he said the *takbir*, he was stabbed in his place. He said: I heard him saying, "The dog has killed me," or "The dog has eaten me." ‘Amr said: I do not know which of the two he said. He said: There was no one between me and him except Ibn ‘Abbas. ‘Umar took the hand of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf and brought him forward. The non-Arab (al-‘ilj) fled with a double-edged knife in his hand; he would not pass by a man, right or left, but he would stab him, until he struck thirteen men, nine of whom died. He said: When a man from the Muslims saw that, he threw a cloak over him to capture him. When he thought he was being captured, he slaughtered himself. He said: We prayed the dawn prayer, a light prayer. He said: As for the corners of the mosque, they did not know what the matter was, except that when they missed ‘Umar’s voice, they began to say, "Subhan Allah," twice. When they left, the first to enter upon him was Ibn ‘Abbas. He said, "Look who killed me." He said: He looked for a while, then came and said, "The slave of al-Mughirah, the craftsman," and he was a carpenter. He said: ‘Umar said, "Praise be to Allah who did not make my death at the hands of a man who claims Islam. May Allah fight him; I had commanded him to do good." He said: Then he said to Ibn ‘Abbas, "You and your father used to love that the non-Arabs (al-‘uluj) should be numerous in Medina." Ibn ‘Abbas said, "If you wish, we will do [otherwise]." He said, "After they have spoken your language, prayed your prayer, and performed your rites?" He said: The people said to him, "There is no harm upon you." He said: He called for *nabidh* (date drink) and drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then he called for milk and drank it, and it came out of his wound. He realized it was death, so he said to ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, "Look at what I owe in debt and calculate it." He said, "Eighty-six thousand." He said, "If the wealth of the family of ‘Umar can cover it, then pay it on my behalf from their wealth. If not, then ask the Banu ‘Adi ibn Ka‘b. If it does not suffice from their wealth, then ask the Quraysh, and do not go beyond them to others. Pay it on my behalf." "Go to ‘A’ishah, the Mother of the Believers, and give greetings, and say: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab asks for permission, and do not say ‘the Commander of the Faithful,’ for I am not their commander today, to be buried with his two companions." He said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar went to her and found her sitting and weeping. He gave greetings, then said, "‘Umar ibn al-Khattab asks for permission to be buried with his two companions." She said, "By Allah, I wanted it for myself, but today I will prefer him over myself." When he returned, it was said, "This is ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar." He said: "Lift me up." A man supported him, and he said, "What do you have?" He said, "She has given you permission." ‘Umar said, "There was nothing more important to me than that." Then he said, "When I die, carry me on my bed, then stand with me at the door, then ask for permission and say: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab asks for permission. If she gives you permission, then enter me, and if she does not give permission, then return me to the graveyards of the Muslims." He said: When he was carried, it was as if the people had not been struck by a calamity except on that day. He said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar gave greetings and said, "‘Umar ibn al-Khattab asks for permission," and she gave him permission, as Allah honored him with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and with Abu Bakr. They said to him when death approached him, "Appoint a successor." He said, "I do not find anyone more entitled to this matter than these people whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) died while he was pleased with them." Whichever of them they appoint as successor, he is the successor after me. He named ‘Ali, ‘Uthman, Talhah, al-Zubayr, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf, and Sa‘d. "If it falls to Sa‘d, then that is it; otherwise, whoever they appoint as successor, let him seek his help, for I did not remove him due to incapacity or treachery." He said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar began to consult with them, though he had no part in the matter. He said: When they gathered, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf said, "Entrust your matter to three men." He said: Al-Zubayr entrusted his matter to ‘Ali, Talhah entrusted his matter to ‘Uthman, and Sa‘d entrusted his matter to ‘Abd al-Rahman. He said: Those three consulted when the matter was entrusted to them. He said: ‘Abd al-Rahman said, "Which of you will renounce the matter and entrust it to me, and you have Allah as a witness that I will not fall short in choosing the best and most excellent of you for the Muslims?" The two elders, ‘Ali and ‘Uthman, remained silent. ‘Abd al-Rahman said, "Will you entrust it to me, and I will withdraw from it? By Allah, I will not fall short in choosing the best and most excellent of you for the Muslims." They said, "Yes." He went aside with ‘Ali and said, "You have kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and precedence. By Allah, if you are appointed, you will surely act justly, and if ‘Uthman is appointed, you will surely listen and obey." He said: He said, "Yes." He said: He went aside with ‘Uthman and said the same to him. ‘Uthman said to him, "Yes." Then he said, "O ‘Uthman, extend your hand." He extended his hand, and he pledged allegiance to him, and ‘Ali and the people pledged allegiance to him. Then ‘Umar said, "I advise the successor after me to fear Allah, and [to treat] the early Emigrants well, that he should recognize their right and respect their sanctity. I advise him well regarding the people of the provinces, for they are the shield of Islam, the rage of the enemy, and the collectors of wealth; that nothing of their surplus should be taken except with their consent. I advise him well regarding the Ansar, who occupied the Home and the Faith, that their good-doers should be accepted and their wrong-doers should be overlooked. I advise him well regarding the Bedouins, for they are the root of the Arabs and the substance of Islam, that [charity] should be taken from the surplus of their wealth and returned to their poor. And I advise him regarding the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger, that their treaty should be fulfilled for them, that they should not be burdened beyond their capacity, and that they should be fought from behind."
