Hadith 36:528

Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Shu’bah, from Qatadah, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d al-Ghatafani, from Ma’dan ibn Abi Talhah al-Ya’mari, that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab stood as a preacher on a Friday, or he preached on a Friday. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then he mentioned the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and Abu Bakr. Then he said: "O people, I have seen a vision as if a red rooster pecked me twice, and I do not see that as anything but the approach of my term. People are telling me to appoint a successor, but Allah would not let His religion and His caliphate go to waste, nor that with which He sent His Prophet. If a matter hastens me, then the caliphate is a matter of consultation among these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was pleased when he passed away. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, then listen to him and obey him." "I have known that men will challenge this matter, and I fought them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do that, then those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. By Allah, I do not leave behind me anything more important to me than the matter of the *kalalah* (one who leaves no direct descendants or ascendants). I asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) about it, and he was never as harsh with me regarding anything as he was with me regarding it, until he poked his finger into my side or my chest. Then he said: 'O ‘Umar, the verse of summer which was revealed at the end of Surat al-Nisa’ is sufficient for you.' If I live, I will issue a ruling regarding it that no one who reads the Quran or does not read the Quran will disagree upon." Then he said: "O Allah, I call You to witness over the governors of the provinces, for I only sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, to distribute their spoils among them, and to be just among them. Whoever finds a matter difficult, let him refer it to me." Then he said: "O people, you eat two plants that I do not see as anything but foul: this garlic and this onion. I used to see a man during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) whose scent was detected from them, so he would be taken by the hand until he was brought out to al-Baqi’. So whoever must eat them, let him kill them by cooking." He said: ‘Umar preached this on a Friday, and he was struck on a Wednesday, with four days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah.
