Hadith 36:540

Muhammad bin Bishr narrated to us, Muhammad bin ‘Amr narrated to us, Abu Salamah and Yahya bin ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib and the elders narrated to us, they said: ‘Umar bin al-Khattab saw in a dream, and he said: "I saw a red rooster peck me three pecks between the chest and the navel." Asma’ bint ‘Umays, the mother of ‘Abd Allah bin Ja‘far, said: "Tell him to make a will," and she used to interpret dreams. I do not know if it reached him or not. Then Abu Lu’lu’ah, the Magian disbeliever, the slave of al-Mughirah bin Shu‘bah, came to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Mughirah has imposed upon me a tax that I cannot bear." He said: "How much has he imposed upon you?" He said: "Such and such." He said: "And what is your work?" He said: "I grind millstones." He said: "That is not much for you; there is no one in our land who makes them except you. Will you not make a millstone for me?" He said: "Yes, by Allah, I will certainly make you a millstone that the people of the horizons will hear of." ‘Umar went out for Hajj, and when he returned, he lay down at al-Muhassab and placed his cloak under his head. He looked at the moon, and its evenness and beauty pleased him. He said: "It began weak, then Allah did not cease to increase it and cause it to grow until it became even and was at its most beautiful. Then it decreases until it returns as it was, and such is all of creation." Then he raised his hands and said: "O Allah, my subjects have become numerous and spread out, so take me to You, neither incapable nor negligent." He returned to Medina, and it was mentioned to him that a woman from the Muslims had died in al-Bayda’, cast upon the ground, and people passed by her, but no one shrouded her and no one buried her, until Kulayb bin al-Bukayr al-Laythi passed by her and stayed with her until he shrouded her and buried her. This was mentioned to ‘Umar, and he said: "Who passed by her from the Muslims?" They said: "‘Abd Allah bin ‘Umar passed by her among those who passed by her from the Muslims." He called him and said: "Woe to you! You passed by a woman from the Muslims cast on the side of the road, and you did not bury her and did not shroud her?" He said: "I did not perceive her, and no one mentioned her to me." He said: "I fear that there is no good in you." He said: "Who buried her and shrouded her?" They said: "Kulayb bin Bukayr al-Laythi." He said: "By Allah, it is fitting that Kulayb should attain good." ‘Umar went out waking the people with his whip for the morning prayer, and the disbeliever Abu Lu’lu’ah met him and stabbed him three stabs between the chest and the navel. He also stabbed Kulayb bin Bukayr and finished him off. The people shouted, and a man threw a hooded cloak over his head, then he embraced him. ‘Umar was carried to the house, and ‘Abd al-Rahman bin ‘Awf led the people in prayer. It was said to ‘Umar: "The prayer." So he prayed, and his wound was gushing. He said: "There is no share in Islam for one who has no prayer." He prayed while his blood was gushing. Then the people turned to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, there is no harm upon you, and we hope that Allah will overlook your deeds and delay you until a time or until good." Ibn ‘Abbas entered upon him, and he used to admire him, and he said: "Go out and see who is my companion." Then he went out and came back and said: "Rejoice, O Commander of the Faithful, your companion is Abu Lu’lu’ah the Magian, the slave of al-Mughirah bin Shu‘bah." He said "Allahu Akbar" until his voice went out from the door. Then he said: "Praise be to Allah who did not make it a man from the Muslims to argue with me over a prostration he prostrated to Allah on the Day of Resurrection." Then he turned to the people and said: "Was this by a consensus of yours?" They said: "Allah forbid! By Allah, we would have wished that we ransomed you with our fathers and added to your life from our own lives; there is no harm upon you." He said: "O Yarfa’, woe to you, give me to drink." He brought him a cup containing sweet nabidh (date drink), and he drank it, and he pressed his cloak against his stomach. He said: "When the drink reached his stomach, it came out from the stabs." They said: "Praise be to Allah, this is blood that was contained in your interior, and Allah has brought it out from your interior." He said: "O Yarfa’, woe to you, give me milk to drink." He brought milk, and he drank it. When it reached his interior, it came out from the stabs. When they saw that, they knew he was dying. They said: "May Allah reward you with good; you used to act among us according to the Book of Allah and follow the Sunnah of your two companions, not deviating from it to anything else. May Allah reward you with the best reward." He said: "Are you envious of me for the leadership? By Allah, I would have wished that I escape from it evenly—neither for me nor against me. Rise and consult regarding your affair. Appoint a man from among you as your leader, and whoever opposes him, strike his head." They stood up, and ‘Abd Allah bin ‘Umar was supporting him against his chest. ‘Abd Allah said: "Are you appointing a leader while the Commander of the Faithful is alive?" ‘Umar said: "No, but Suhayb shall lead the prayer for three days, and wait for Talhah, and consult regarding your affair. Appoint a man from among you as your leader, and if he opposes you, strike his head." He said: "Go to ‘A’ishah and give her my greeting, and say: ‘Umar says: If that does not harm you and does not constrain you, I would like to be buried with my two companions. But if it harms you and constrains you, then by my life, there have been buried in this Baqi‘ from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Mothers of the Believers those who are better than ‘Umar." The messenger came to her, and she said: "That does not harm me and does not constrain me." He said: "Then bury me with them." ‘Abd Allah bin ‘Umar said: "Death began to overcome him while I was holding him to my chest." He said: "Woe to you, place my head on the ground." He said: "A faintness took him, and I felt that." He regained consciousness and said: "Place my head on the ground." I placed his head on the ground, and he rubbed it in the dust and said: "Woe to ‘Umar and woe to his mother if Allah does not forgive him." Muhammad bin ‘Amr said: "The people of the Shura (consultation) were ‘Ali, ‘Uthman, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Sa‘d, and ‘Abd al-Rahman bin ‘Awf."
