Hadith 36:76

Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: Abu Bakr purchased a saddle from 'Azib for thirteen dirhams. Abu Bakr said to 'Azib, "Order al-Bara' to carry it to my saddle-place." 'Azib said to him, "Not until you tell us how you and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) acted when you both departed and the polytheists were seeking you." He said: "We departed from Makkah and traveled through our night and our day until it was midday and the sun reached its zenith. I cast my gaze to see if I could see any shade to take shelter in. Suddenly, I saw a rock, so we reached it. There was a remnant of shade, so I leveled it. Then I spread a fur for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) upon it, then I said, 'Lie down, O Messenger of Allah.' So he lay down. Then I went to inspect what was around me to see if I could see anyone from the pursuers. Suddenly, I saw a shepherd driving his sheep toward the rock, wanting from it what I wanted. I asked him and said, 'To whom do you belong, O boy?' He said, 'To a man from Quraysh.' He named him, and I recognized him. I said, 'Is there any milk in your sheep?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Will you milk for me?' He said, 'Yes.' He said: So I ordered him, and he restrained a sheep from his flock. I ordered him to shake its udder free of dust, then I ordered him to shake his palms. He said, 'Like this,' and he struck one of his hands against the other. He milked a small amount of milk, and I had with me a water-skin for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with a cloth over its mouth. I poured [the milk] over the water-skin until its bottom cooled. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and found that he had awakened. I said, 'Drink, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) drank until I was satisfied. Then I said, 'Is it time to depart, O Messenger of Allah?' So we departed, and the people were seeking us, but none of them caught up with us except Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'sham on a horse of his. I said, 'This is the pursuer who has caught up with us, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Do not grieve, for Allah is with us.' Until, when he drew near to us and there was between us and him the distance of a spear, or two, or three, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is the pursuer who has caught up with us,' and I wept. He said, 'What makes you weep?' I said, 'By Allah, I do not weep for myself, but I weep for you.' He said, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) invoked against him and said, 'O Allah, suffice us against him however You will.' He said, so his horse sank into the earth up to its belly. He jumped off it, then said, 'O Muhammad, I have known that this is your doing. So invoke Allah to save me from what I am in, for by Allah, I will surely divert those behind me from the pursuit. This is my quiver, so take an arrow from it, for you will pass by my camels and my sheep at such-and-such a place, so take from them what you need.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, 'We have no need of your camels.' He turned away from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) prayed for him, and he departed, returning to his companions. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) proceeded, and I was with him, until we arrived in Madinah at night. The people disputed over him, as to whom he would stay with. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, 'I will stay tonight with the Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of 'Abd al-Muttalib, to honor them with that.' The people went out until he entered Madinah, and on the road and on the houses, the boys and servants were saying, 'Muhammad has come! The Messenger of Allah has come!' When it became morning, he set out and stayed where Allah commanded him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had prayed toward Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) loved to be directed toward the Ka'bah. So Allah revealed: 'We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram.' He said, so he was directed toward the Ka'bah. The foolish among the people said, 'What has turned them away from their qiblah which they were upon? Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."' He said, and a man prayed with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), then he went out after he had prayed and passed by a group of the Ansar while they were bowing in the 'Asr prayer toward Bayt al-Maqdis. He said, and he testified that he had prayed with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and that he had been directed toward the Ka'bah. He said, so the people turned until they were directed toward the Ka'bah. Al-Bara' said: Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, brother of the Banu 'Abd al-Dar ibn Qusay, had come down to us from the Muhajirun. We said to him, 'What has the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) done?' He said, 'He is in his place, and his companions are on my heels.' Then 'Amr ibn Umm Maktum, the blind brother of the Banu Fihr, came to us. We said to him, 'What has the Messenger of Allah and his companions done behind you?' He said, 'They are on my heels.' Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab came to us after them with twenty riders. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to us after them, and Abu Bakr was with him. He did not arrive to us until I had read several surahs from the Mufassal. Then we went out to meet the caravan, and we found that they had been warned."
