Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:8

Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from ‘Ata’, from Sa‘id, from Ibn ‘Abbas, that there was no tribe of the jinn except that they had seats for listening. He said: When the revelation would descend, the angels would hear a sound like the sound of a piece of iron thrown onto a smooth rock. He said: When the angels heard it, they would fall down in prostration, and they would not raise their heads until it had descended. When it had descended, some of them would say to others: "What did your Lord say?" If it was something that would occur in the heaven, they would say: "The Truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great." If it was something that would occur on the earth regarding a matter of the Unseen, or death, or something that would occur on the earth, they would speak of it and say: "Such and such will happen." The devils would hear it and bring it down to their allies. When Allah sent Muhammad, they were driven away by the stars. The first to know of this were the Thaqif. The owner of sheep among them would go to his sheep and slaughter a sheep every day, and the owner of camels would slaughter a camel every day, so the people hastened to [spend] their wealth. Some of them said to others: "Do not do this, for if these are the stars by which one is guided, then it is [a natural phenomenon], and if not, then it is a matter that has occurred." They looked, and the stars by which one is guided were as they were; nothing had been cast from them. So they refrained. Allah turned the jinn away, and they heard the Qur’an. When they attended it, they said: "Listen quietly." He said: The devils went to Iblis and informed him. He said: "This is an event that has occurred on the earth. Bring me soil from every land." When they brought him the soil of Tihamah, he said: "The event is here."
