Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:98

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from ‘Umar ibn al-Hakam ibn Thawban, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent ‘Alqama ibn Mujazziz on an expedition in which I was among them. When he reached the end of his expedition, or was on some part of the road, a group of the army asked his permission [to leave], and he gave them permission. He appointed ‘Abdullah ibn Hudhafah ibn Qays al-Sahmi over them, and I was among those who went on the expedition with him. When we were on some part of the road, the people lit a fire to warm themselves or to cook something for themselves. ‘Abdullah—and there was a playfulness in him—said: "Do I not have the right of hearing and obedience over you?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Then I will not command you to do anything except that you do it?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Then I command you to jump into this fire." Some people stood up and prepared themselves. When he thought they were about to jump, he said: "Hold back, for I was only joking with you." When we arrived, we mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he said: "Whoever among them commands you to commit a sin, do not obey them."
