Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 28:103

Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib, from Abu al-Bakhtari, who said: When Salman fought the polytheists from the people of Persia, he said: "Hold back until I invite them as I used to hear the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, invite them." So he came to them and said: "I am a man from among you; you know my status among these people. We invite you to Islam. If you accept Islam, then you have the same as what we have, and upon you is the same as what is upon us. If you refuse, then pay the Jizya (tribute) willingly while you are humbled. And if you refuse, we will fight you." They refused him, so he said to the people: "Advance toward them."
