Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 28:1052

Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, he said: Hisham ibn Sa’d narrated to us, he said: Qays ibn Bashir al-Taghlibi narrated to me, he said: My father was a companion of Abu al-Darda’ in Damascus. There was in Damascus a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who was called Ibn Hanzaliyyah from the Ansar. One day, he passed by us while we were with Abu al-Darda’, and Abu al-Darda’ said, "Say a word that will benefit us and not harm you." He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent out a military detachment, and it returned. A man from among them came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to sit. He said to a man beside him, "If you had seen us when we met the enemy, and so-and-so charged and thrust [his spear], saying, 'Take it, and I am the Ghifari youth!'" The man said, "I do not see it but that his reward has been nullified." The other said, "I do not see any harm in that." They disputed about that and differed until the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard that. He said, "Subhan Allah! There is no harm in him being rewarded or praised." I saw Abu al-Darda’ become so pleased with that, to the point that he rose up until I thought he was going to kneel on his knees, and he said, "You heard it from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?" He replied, "Yes."
