Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 28:1180

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from ‘Umar ibn al-Hakam ibn Thawban, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent ‘Alqama ibn Mujazziz on an expedition in which I was among them. When he reached the head of ‘Arana, or was at some point on the road, a group of the army asked his permission [to leave], and he gave them permission and appointed ‘Abdullah ibn Hudhafah ibn Qays al-Sahmi over them. I was among those who went on the expedition with him. When we were at some point on the road, the people lit a fire to warm themselves or to cook something upon it. ‘Abdullah—and there was a sense of jest in him—said: "Do I not have the right of hearing and obedience over you?" They said: "Yes." He said: "And will you not do anything I command you to do?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Then I command you to throw yourselves into this fire." Some people stood up and began to fasten their garments [to jump]. When he realized they were about to jump, he said: "Hold back, for I was only joking with you." When we arrived, they mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: "Whoever among them commands you to commit a sin, do not obey him."
