Hadith 28:371

Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Asadi narrated to us, he said: Hibban narrated to us, from Mujahid, from al-Sha’bi, that: Umar was brought seven million [dirhams] from Jalula, so he decided to distribute the stipends. He consulted Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf regarding that. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf said: "Begin with yourself, for you are more entitled to that." He said: "No, rather I will begin with those closest to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) from among those who witnessed Badr, until it reaches me." He said: So he began and assigned five thousand to Ali, then to the Banu Hashim who witnessed Badr, then to their freed slaves, then to their allies, then the closest and then the next closest, until it reached him.

حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله الأسدي قال ثنا حبان عن مجاهد عن الشعبي أن عمر أتى من جلولاء بسبعة آلاف ألف ففرض العطاء فاستشار في ذلك عبد الرحمن بن عوف فقال عبد الرحمن بن عوف ابدأ بنفسك فأنت أحق بذلك قال لا بل أبدأ بالأقرب من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ممن شهد بدرا حتى ينتهي ذلك إلي قال فبدأ ففرض لعلي في خمسة آلاف ثم لبني هاشم ممن شهد بدرا ثم لمواليهم ثم لحلفائهم ثم الأقرب فالأقرب حتى ينتهي ذلك إلي
