Waki’ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Jabir, from ‘Amir, that al-Rufayl, the *Dihqan* (landowner/chief) of al-Nahrayn, accepted Islam. ‘Umar compensated him with two thousand, lifted the *jizyah* (poll tax) from his head, and returned his land to him, for which he would pay the *kharaj* (land tax).
