Hadith 28:454
Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from his father, from Hanash, from Ikrimah, who said: It was said to Ibn Abbas: "Do the non-Arabs (Ajam) have the right to build a structure or a church in the cities of the Muslims?" He said: "Any city that the Arabs founded, the non-Arabs have no right to build a structure in it—or he said: a church—nor should they strike a bell in it, nor drink wine in it, nor keep a pig in it, nor bring one into it. As for any city that the non-Arabs founded, which Allah opened to the Arabs and they settled in—meaning under their rule—then the non-Arabs have what is in their covenant, and the non-Arabs have the right that the Arabs fulfill their covenant to them, and they shall not burden them beyond their capacity."
