Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 28:805

Fudayl ibn 'Iyad narrated to us, from Hisham, from al-Hasan, who said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to eat from the spoils of war when they obtained them, such as sheep and cattle, and they would feed their mounts from them. They would not sell [them], for if they sold [any of it], they would return it to the [general] distribution.
