Waki’ narrated to us, he said: Malik ibn Mighwal narrated to us, from Talha ibn Musarrif, from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid al-Nakha’i, who said: I said to my father, "O father, during the governorship of al-Hajjaj, do you participate in military expeditions?" He said, "O my son, I have reached people who were more intense in their hatred for al-Hajjaj than you are, yet they would not abandon jihad under any circumstances. And if the opinion of the people regarding jihad were like your opinion, I do not see that the tribute—meaning the land tax (kharaj)—would be paid."
