Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:1264

Abd al-A’la narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha’bi, that Sa’id ibn al-’As led the people in the Dhuhr and ‘Asr prayers, and he recited aloud. The people glorified [Allah] (said SubhanAllah), but he continued in his recitation. When he finished, he ascended the pulpit and addressed the people, saying: "In every prayer, there is a recitation. Indeed, the prayers of the day are silent, but I disliked remaining silent. Do not think that I did this as an innovation."
