Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:2005

Isma'il ibn 'Ulayyah narrated to us, from Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah, who said: I said to 'Abdullah ibn Abi Mulaykah, "I recited the prostration [verse] while I was circumambulating the House [the Ka'bah], so what is your opinion?" He said, "I command you to prostrate." I said, "If I do, the people will leave me while they are circumambulating and say, 'A madman.' So, am I able to prostrate while they are circumambulating?" He said, "By Allah, if you say that, Ibn al-Zubayr recited the prostration [verse] and did not prostrate. Then al-Harith ibn Abi Rabi'ah stood up and recited the prostration [verse], then he came and sat down and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, what prevented you from prostrating a while ago when you recited the prostration [verse]?' He [Ibn al-Zubayr] said, 'For what reason should I prostrate? If I were in prayer, I would have prostrated, but as for when I am not in prayer, I do not prostrate.'" He said: And I asked 'Ata' about that, and he said, "Face the House and gesture with your head."
