Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:2834

Ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Khalid, from Ibn Sirin, who said: They used to seek permission from the Imam while he was on the pulpit. When Ziyad came and that became frequent, he said: "Whoever places his hand upon his nose, then that is his permission."
