Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:2899

'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Burayd, from Makhul, that he set out for Hajj and arrived in Tabuk on a Friday. He [the Imam] prayed two rak'ahs in front of them and did not deliver a khutbah (sermon). Makhul said: "May Allah fight this man who diminished the prayer of the people and did not deliver a khutbah. For the Friday prayer was only shortened because of the khutbah."
