Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:3521

Hussain bin Ali narrated to us, from Za'idah, from Hisham, who said: Al-Hasan used to say regarding that which the Imam brings forward [for the latecomer to complete]: If he wishes, he may recite from where the Imam finished, and if he wishes, he may specify some of the chapters.
