Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 3:3742

Waki’ narrated to us, he said: Aban bin Yazid al-Attar narrated to us, from Budayl bin Maysara al-Uqayli, from Abu Atiyyah, a man from among them, who said: Malik bin al-Huwayrith used to come to us in this prayer place of ours, and we would converse. Then the prayer time arrived, so we said to him, "Step forward [to lead the prayer]." He said, "Do not let some of you step forward until I tell you why I do not step forward. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Whoever visits a people, let him not lead them in prayer, but let a man from among them lead them.'"
