Hadith 3:4792
Husayn ibn Ali narrated to us, from Za’idah, from Musa ibn Abi ‘A’ishah, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, who said: I entered upon Aisha and said to her, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" She said, "Yes. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) became heavy [with illness], and he said, 'Have the people prayed?' I said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Put water for me in the washbasin.' She said, 'So we did, and he bathed. Then he went to stand up, but he fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'They are waiting for you.' He said, 'Put water for me in the washbasin.' She said, 'So we did, and he bathed. Then he went to stand up, but he fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'They are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace),' and the people were remaining in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for the final night prayer (Isha)." She said, "So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent word to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said, 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) commands you to lead the people in prayer.' Abu Bakr, who was a tender-hearted man, said, 'O Umar, lead the people in prayer.' Umar said to him, 'You are more entitled to that.' So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days." She said, "Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) felt a lightness in himself, so he went out supported by two men for the noon prayer, while Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. She said, 'When Abu Bakr saw him, he went to step back, but the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gestured to him not to step back, and said to the two men, 'Seat me beside him.' So they seated him beside Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr began to pray while standing, following the prayer of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the people were praying following the prayer of Abu Bakr, while the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was sitting." Ubaydullah said: I entered upon Abdullah ibn Abbas and said, "Shall I not present to you what Aisha told me regarding the illness of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" He said, "Bring it forth." So I presented her hadith to him, and he did not deny any of it.
