Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 1:1051

Ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Ash'ath, from al-Sha'bi, who said: The sleeper and the one who is awake are the same when ablution becomes obligatory upon him; he shall not put his hand into the vessel until he washes it.
