Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 1:1825

Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Humayd, from Bakr, from Abu Rafi‘, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) met him on one of the paths of Medina while he was in a state of major ritual impurity (junub). He slipped away and went and performed ghusl. The Prophet (peace be upon him) missed him, and when he came to him, he said, "Where were you, O Abu Hurayrah?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, you met me while I was in a state of major ritual impurity, so I disliked sitting with you until I had performed ghusl." He said, "Subhan Allah! Indeed, the believer does not become impure."
