Hadith 35:292
Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, who said: Safwan bin Umayyah was among the *Tulaqa* (those freed by the Prophet upon the conquest of Mecca). He came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and made his riding beast kneel, and placed his cloak upon it, then he stepped aside to relieve himself. A man came and stole his cloak, so he caught him and brought him to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He (the Prophet) ordered that his hand be cut off. He (Safwan) said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you cut it off for a cloak? I grant it to him." He (the Prophet) said: "Why not before you brought him to me?"
