Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:1003

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ali bin Mushir and Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-Shaybani, from al-Sha'bi, from Shurayh, that he used to see no harm in purchasing the one hundred [dirhams] of the stipend with goods. He said: And al-Sha'bi said: He shall not purchase it with goods nor with anything else.
