Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:101

Abu Usama narrated to us, from Hisham, from Muhammad, regarding a man who gives a garment to a man, and he hires him [to work on it] for less [than the standard wage]. He said: There is no harm in it if he works on it and cuts it. He said: That he seeks his permission is more beloved to me.
