Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:1900

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ibn Abi Za'idah narrated to us, from Zakariya, from 'Amir, who said: The slave strives [to earn his freedom], and the *wala'* (right of inheritance/patronage) belongs to the one who emancipated him.
