Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:206

Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah, from Ibrahim, who said: If a man hires a riding animal to a place, he is entitled to its hire. If he exceeds [the agreed distance] with it and it dies, he is entitled to the first hire, and he is liable for it.
