Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:2138

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Abd al-Malik, from Ata, regarding a man who bought a slave from a man, but did not take possession of him until he emancipated him. He said: His emancipation is not valid until he takes possession of him or pays him the price.
