Hadith 13:2588

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ali bin Hashim narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Abu Dhabba, who said: A *mukātab* (an enslaved person with a contract of manumission) was brought to Umar, having brought the wealth in its entirety. His master said: "I will not accept it from you; I only made a contract with you so that I might take it from you in installments over the years, which would benefit me, and perhaps along with that, you might die and I would inherit from you." Umar ordered the wealth to be placed in the public treasury (*bayt al-māl*), then he disbursed it to him in installments, and he finalized his manumission.
